MPT’s On the Trail of Captain John Smith Wins CINE Golden Eagle Award

Chesapeake Bay Week program recreates explorer’s famous journey 400 years after he set sail

Owings Mills, MD—Maryland Public Television’s (MPT) original documentary On the Trail of Captain John Smith: Rediscovering the Chesapeake Bay, was recently awarded a prestigious 2008 CINE Golden Eagle Award in the organization’s history category.

The program, produced by MPT’s Susanne C. Stahley, premiered as part of MPT’s fourth annual Chesapeake Bay Week 2008. It follows a team of 12 adventurers recreating the historic 1608 voyage of Captain John Smith and his crew, 400 years after Smith explored the Chesapeake Bay in search of gold, silver and a passage to the Orient.

Founded in 1957 by a consortium representing business, education and government to depict American life and thought realistically for a global audience, CINE recognizes and fosters the highest quality of non-theatrical film and video production through its semi-annual competitions. The Golden Eagle Awards recognize excellence in documentary and other informational film and video production.
