Episode #21

Palermo. The end of the 1980s. Biagio (Daniele Liotti) has all but recovered from the ambush, his leg however seems irreparably compromised. Teresa (Simona Cavallari), who Falcone has found a position for at the Courthouse, is by his side and Antonio, his son, is studying for his school leaving exams. Straight after, the boy informs his parents - to their astonishment - that he also wants to join the police. In the meantime, Riina seeks a solution to the fact that Falcone will soon be appointed as head of an important office. He therefore considers it his victory that, by contrast, the more senior judge, Meli, is appointed who, with his bureaucratic approach, in fact hinders the work of the pool. The Corleonesi family, however, no longer seem to be so compact. The killer Scarpuzzedda organizes robberies on his own account, provoking the reproof of Provenzano (Salvatore Lazzaro), and for this reason he is eliminated. In Rome, in the meantime, the Supreme Court rejects the appeals made and confirms the life sentences for all the Corleonesi. Riina is furious with the politicians who have always supported him in Sicily and arranges for Salvo Lima and then Ignazio Salvo to be killed, then he orders Brusca to deal with Falcone and Borsellino.Just over two months later, both are killed, and with them their escorts and the judge Francesca Morvillo are massacred. Provenzano is sceptical of this increasingly violent attack against the State. There no longer seems to be the original feeling between the two men. Riina thunders that in Sicily it is the Corleonesi who rule, and, via Ciancimino sends the State, represented by the captain of the Carabinieri Li Donni a "screed" with his conditions for bringing the massacres to an end.Ciancimino, however, reveals to the captain that the Corleonesi are no longer a united family. Shortly after, during an apparent routine control, a man with a gun on the dashboard is stopped at a road block. It is Balduccio Di Maggio, a foot soldier of Riina's, he want to talk. Ambushes, controls and, shortly after, Riina is arrested by the men of captain Ultimo. At the police barracks, the old godfather denies his identity. His identification is hard going, the photographs in the possession of the Carabinieri date back to 1948 and the fingerprints held at Ucciardone have disappeared. It will be Biagio who identifies Totò, in a hard confrontation, while in Palermo, Bagarella and Provenzano make Riina's family disappear from their home along with their traces.

Corleone - Episode 5
Episode #20

It is the 1980s. Totò Riina is by now the undisputed head of Cosa Nostra and the new Commission is peopled by his faithful followers alone: Michele Greco, Brusca, Di Maio and naturally Binnu Provenzano. Riina, heedless of Binnu's requests for moderation, savagely wipes out any opposition and when Apuzzo, one of the old guard bosses, contacts Buscetta, worried about the turn which the business is taking after the latest deaths decreed by Totò - the member of parliament Pio La Torre, the prefect Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and the judge Rocco Chinnici - arranges for him to be eliminated and also wipes out the Buscetta clan and all its affiliates, dissolving their bodies in acid.In the meantime, Biagio unexpectedly receives a visit from Mangano, now in retirement, who, aware of his experience of the Corleonesi, places him in contact with the judges Falcone and Borsellino, who, co-ordinated by the Judge Caponnetto, have set up an anti-mafia pool. The judge's intention is to unite all the mafia investigations and dig into the assets of the bosses. Biagio works alongside two valid police officers, Montana and Cassarà, and the hope of finally seeing Riina caught is revived in him. In the meantime, Falcone obtains the extradition of Masino Buscetta, captured in Brazil. Biagio, sent along with other police officers to collect the boss, saves his life on the plane. Once landed, Buscetta agrees to collaborate. Buscetta's revelations permit Falcone to issue 366 warrants, but the arrest which encourages Biagio more than any other is that of the member of parliament Vito Ciancimino.Falcone and Borsellino, isolated for reasons of security at Asinara, prepare the preliminary trial proceedings. In the meanwhile, Riina, worried, commissions his killer Scarpuzzedda to kill Montana, and Cassarà. Antonio, Biagio's son, struck by the dramatic events, escapes from Rome to stay by his father's side. Teresa, moved by his courage, follows him to Palermo and accepts to return to Biagio. It is 1986 when the maxi-trial against Cosa Nostra commences, an important trial which ended on 16 December 1987 with 2665 years of imprisonment and 19 life sentences, the foremost being the life sentencing of Riina, Provenzano and the allied bosses. While the judge reads the sentence out, Biagio realizes he is being followed, shoots the killers who want to catch him and take him to Totò, who has asked for him, but is seriously wounded.

Corleone - Episode 4
Episode #19

During the 1980s in Palermo, the new and extremely lucrative business of the mafia is the drug trade which the bosses import from Thailand, refining them and then sending them under the form of heroine to their relatives in America. The Corleonesi who do not have contacts in the USA are forced to rely on the Palermo bosses so as to gain a slice of the action from time to time. This subjection does not go down well with Riina. His anxiety does not escape the mafia heads Bontate and Inzerillo who rebuke Masino Buscetta for having brought u Curtu, as they contemptibly call him, into the Commission. Riina, who has ingratiated himself with the lower level Mafiosi belonging to the other families in the province by means of money and gifts, is ready to go to war.Biagio, in the meanwhile, is working alongside Boris Giuliano whose investigations lead to the discovery of the mafia refineries and the arrest of the mafia chemist Francesco Marino Mannoia. When, however, Giuliano tries to turn the screws on and obtains authorization to inspect the bank accounts of the bosses, Riina orders his brother-in-law, Luchino Bagarella, to kill him. The death of the police chief, Boris Giuliano, throws Biagio into turmoil. In the meantime Teresa, who has just discovered that she is pregnant, goes to a clinic in Palermo for an appointment. But she finds Ninetta Bagarella in the same hospital, who has just given birth to her third child, and the two women meet in the corridor. Teresa, in a panic, calls Biagio while she escapes through the streets of Palermo. Ninetta, in turn, abandons the hospital in a hurry. Due to the shock, Teresa loses the baby but this time leaves Palermo and moves to Rome with little Antonio. In the meantime, the mafia war against the State continues, grimly marked by the murder of the judges Terranova and Costa, and Riina, despite the perplexities expressed by Binnu, also kills the bosses Bontate and Inzerillo wiping out the families thanks to the information of their lower ranks. Buscetta, who had for some time foretold the end of Cosa Nostra, escapes to Brazil. While Biagio is totally alienated at police headquarters and must return to the Corleone passport office, Riina has achieved his goal: he is now the greatly feared boss of the Sicilian mafia and with Michele Greco meets John Gambino who is the head of the American mafia. Together with the latter, who is passing through Sicily, he comes to terms and suggests alliances.

It is Biagio, who in the meantime has accepted a transfer to Palermo, who realizes that it is Bagarella but it is impossible to prove it: the Corleonesi have killed the witnesses.Riina in the meantime, like the Palermo bosses, wants a part of the big business run by Vito Ciancimino, the Corleonese who has become mayor of Palermo, but needs greater funds. Therefore, Provenzano and he, without Liggio's approval, kidnap the thirteen year-old Antonino Caruso, whose family is strongly linked to the member of parliament Bernardo Mattarella. Despite the freeing of the adolescent, the mafia bosses fear the heavy reprisals of the Public Prosecutor against the families, thus Riina, without any hesitation, arranges for the Public Prosecutor to be killed and, with the support of Badalamenti and Buscetta, joins the regional mafia "Commission" while Liggio, who starts to be a burden to Riina, thanks to a tip-off, is soon arrested.Ninetta in turn is called before the court, the judges want to send her to the border in North Italy accused of aiding and abetting the Corleonesi mafia band. While the young woman is questioned, Teresa and little Antonio are intimidated by Riina's men.Ninetta is finally released to her home town and condemned to special surveillance but in concurrence with her marriage - celebrated secretly - to Totò she disappears and also becomes a fugitive. Biagio, with his friend and colleague Silvio, try in every way to hunt down Riina who, seeing danger draw near, decides to go on the counterattack. He kills Silvio and beats up Biagio, threatening him to stay away from him. Riina in fact is invincible and continues to extend his power in Sicily. In order to achieve his aims, in 1978 he arranges for Peppe Di Cristina from Caltanissetta and Pippo Calderone from Catania -another two bosses and his bitter opponents - to be killed.
