Internship Opportunities at MPT

Maryland Public Television offers full- and part-time internships for college students throughout the year. Internships are specifically designed to provide training and experience for students interested in public broadcasting.

Internships described below are, in general, the types of assignments that are available from time to time. Please be aware that not all these internships are available every semester. MPT’s Human Resources department maintains information on available internship roles.

Internships are offered to students of all Maryland and DC area colleges and universities. Recruiting is normally accomplished through the school internship or career services office and on-campus through career and internship fairs. Students may also contact MPT directly. The MPT Internship Coordinator processes applications and conducts initial interviews. Interviews are also conducted by the supervisor from the department for which the student is applying. Once accepted, students are assigned to work on a specific project or production for an academic semester. All MPT internships are unpaid.

MPT internships offer a thorough introduction to Maryland Public Television including our mission and expectations. Maryland Public Television is committed to providing solid work experience to serious minded individuals in a positive environment.

General Information

  • Cover letter should specify a first and a second choice internship from the list of opportunities described below.

  • Internships are usually for hours during the standard workday. Nights and weekend hours may occasionally be required but are not routine.

  • Internships run on a schedule similar to the college semester. Internships usually cover the following periods:

    Fall internships - Late August/early September through mid-December.

    Spring internships - Mid/late January through late April.

    Summer internships - Late May/early June through mid-August.

  • Positions offered are unpaid.

  • Students must be college Junior, Senior or Graduate Student.

  • Students must be able to commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week.

  • Student must have reliable transportation.

Internship Opportunities

MPT has current openings for unpaid internships that offer valuable experience in television programming, development, co-productions and related business development. These positions are filled by creative, motivated and energetic students from a variety of majors who lend their effort and time - a minimum of 16 hours per week - in exchange for an engaging educational experience.

POSITION DESCRIPTION PREFERRED MAJOR
Corporate Communications Intern

Maryland Public Television is seeking internship applicants to take our “web 2.0” presence to the next level. Successful candidates will have basic html skills, fluency in today’s social networking sites, passion for new technology, enthusiasm for public television, creative energy to spare and top-notch writing and communications skills. This internship will provide an unprecedented opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the station, including but not limited to publicity, communications, development and content. Opportunities to be innovative will be endless, and “thinking outside the box” will not only be encouraged but applauded.    

Interested candidates should familiarize themselves with MPT’s blog (mpt.org/thebuzz), myspace page (myspace.com/marylandpublictelevision), Facebook group and YouTube page (youtube.com/marylandpublictv) and come prepared with ideas on how to leverage these sites to maximize exposure amongst and involvement with the 18-35 demographic.

Special Project
MPT is seeking internship candidates to take the lead on an exciting and innovative multi-semester project. Candidates will chronicle the history of Maryland Public Television for our upcoming 40th anniversary in 2009. Interested candidates should have solid research skills, a passion for history and an interest in public television. Interns will be immersed in a rich, creative atmosphere where the sky’s the limit. Interns will employ new media technologies and interview techniques and have access to MPT’s extensive archives to create a digitized multimedia historical timeline that will make headlines across the state.

Institutional Advancement / Major & Planned Giving
Internship
MPT’s office of Major and Planned Giving offers learning experiences in donor research and communications. Students will learn to write timely reports for existing projects and identify foundations and individuals likely to support specific MPT priorities. Students will assist the Director and Assistant Manager by drafting newsletter articles, brochures, proposals, and other solicitations and will gain experience in major-donor cultivation and stewardship activities. Students will become familiar with a non-profit culture and will be able to utilize and expand their research and writing skills. Successful interns will possess strong writing and organizational skills, be detail oriented and be comfortable meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Content Enterprises Internship MPT's Content Enterprises offers valuable experience in the development, funding and executive management of television programming for both national and local programs. Interns will provide support for a variety of diverse projects providing the intern with solid exposure to the world of TV programming from conception to funding to production of the program. Interns will support the activities of one of MPT's senior programming executives in the pursuit of new programs and the support and expansion of existing programming ventures. Candidates will be exposed to program/series proposal writing, underwriting proposal writing, creating programming "pitches", show budgeting, production planning, and executive production management for non-fiction, magazine, public affairs, arts, documentary and how-to programs. Candidates should have outgoing personalities, be detail oriented, and possess good writing and computer skills. Ideal candidates will have experience with MS Word, PowerPoint and basic familiarity with spreadsheets and contact management software such as Outlook.
Television Programming and Business Development
Production Assistant Assist videographer/editor, television directors or producers in studio and on location. A Production Assistant must be multitalented and able to assist in the following areas: studio/location camera operator, videotape editor, location sound recordist, lighting director, floor director, studio supervisor and director. May include exposure to special effects design, switcher programming, character generator automation, and multi-camera setups for studio and location. * All Candidates MUST have a flexible schedule and be able to travel. May assist with a variety of MPT productions (MPT on Location, Outdoors Maryland, etc.) and outside clients. Communications / Mass Com. Radio / Television / Film
Assistant to Special Projects Unit Interns assist the Director, Special Projects Unit to coordinate the production of non-broadcast video, photo and print products for out-of-house clients. May help the Director produce, direct and/or edit these programs. The Special Projects Unit represents MPT on a daily basis with leaders of the business community, heads of state agencies and (as needed) with the governor and his executive staff. Education & Community Outreach Candidate will assist MPT with the design, promotion and implementation of education and community outreach initiatives throughout our viewing area. Duties range from project development activities, such as the creation of educator support materials for a pre-algebra game, to assistance with Pre-K through high school teachers' professional development workshops. Candidates may also assist in the coordination of and participation in Ready to Learn workshops. Individuals must have interest or experience in education, community and public policy issues, and Internet resources for educators. Position requires general office work—filing, transcribing phone messages, preparing mailings and conference handouts, and participation in daily operations. Candidates MUST have strong organizational, writing and communication skills, ability to access the World Wide Web, and computer word processing skills. MotorWeek Candidate must be a production student, interested in learning all aspects of program production, including but not limited to research, logging, learning the process of production and the paperwork involved. Position may involve light clerical duties as well as driving. Candidate MUST have excellent driving record and should have an interest in cars. Intern may be able to participate in studio and field shoots as well as edit and audio sessions. Candidate MUST have excellent communication and organizational skills. Candidate MUST have a flexible schedule and be able to travel. Visual Performing Arts - Video Film Emphasis, Communication: Mass Com Radio / TV / Film
Programming Help manage MPT tape library, write nightly voice over copy and perform light clerical duties. Candidate will learn how the air schedule is constructed, how programs are selected and methods for getting program onto air. Candidate must have excellent writing skills. Mass. Com.
Program Guide / Newsletter Writer/Proofreader: Write brief articles and programming highlights for newsletters and program guide. Write/edit TV program listings. Proofread articles and listings for content, grammar and accuracy. Communications: Mass. Com., Journalism
Development Assistant The development office is responsible for fundraising and volunteer management for MPT. Intern will learn how a not for profit station works. Intern will be asked to maintain and update volunteer database, develop training program for on air pledge volunteers, recruit, schedule and confirm telephone pledge volunteer groups and individuals, and handle incoming calls related to volunteer scheduling. Candidate must be detail oriented and have excellent phone and word processing skills. Must have working knowledge of databases and Power Point or similar slide show presentation software.
