Maryland Public Television Honors Cryor, Higginbotham,
Goldwater Regional Conference Highlights
Accomplishments in Women's Health
OWINGS MILLS, MD: Maryland Public Television (MPT) announces the
2002 GBMC Women's Health Conference honorees at this year's conference
which also includes an outreach initiative for displaced women.
Del. Jean B.Cryor (R-15), from Montgomery County; Eve J. Higginbotham,
M.D., professor of ophthalmology at the University of Maryland School
of Medicine in Baltimore; and Del. Marilyn R. Goldwater (D-16) from Montgomery
County have been chosen as this year's conference honorees. Delegate Cryor
has supported a variety of bills to help address the issues women face.
Dr. Higginbotham, president-elect of the Harvard Medical School Alumni
Council, was the first woman in the United States to head a university-based
residency program. As a delegate and registered nurse, Marilyn Goldwater
has dedicated more than 20 years to such issues as mental health, domestic
violence, hospice care, and others. Each honoree receives an award at
the elegant seated luncheon on Saturday, May 18 at Marriott's Hunt Valley
Inn, Cockeysville.
In conjunction with the conference, MPT is holding a drive to collect
full-sized, unused personal care items for donation to Agapé House,
Inc. and Marian House, Inc. Conference attendees are invited to contribute
personal unused items - socks, lotion, soap, bubble bath, deodorant, toothpaste,
etc. - to be distributed to poor and homeless women.
Agapé House, Inc. offers an emergency shelter, residential program
and a number of community based ministries that include a community choir,
computer lab, and camp. Based in Baltimore, Marian House, Inc. is a 40-unit
residential program in five different homes providing education, counseling
and job preparation for employable homeless women. "If we can duplicate
last year's successful sell-out, and each attendee contributes a personal
item, we're looking at 800 items for the women of Agapé House and
Marian House," reports MPT Outreach Manager Deidre Webb.
Health screenings, a continental breakfast, elegant seated lunch, prize
drawings, gift bag, and a myriad of give-aways are included in the $30.00
admission charge. The number of available tickets is limited. For tickets
call (800) 873-6154 or purchase at www.mpt.org. The day's agenda, details
on the Agapé/Marian contributions, as well as general conference
information are also available at www.mpt.org.
