Maryland College
of Art and Design
Maryland College of Art and Design was established in 1957 as
a community of artists providing education and training in the visual
arts to residents of the surrounding area. Over the years, the College
has moved rapidly and decisively from an informal arts center to
a professional, accredited, degree-granting college with a considerable
reputation, but the warm supportive environment that makes this
a unique educational institution hasn't changed.
The Schuler School
of Fine Arts
Since 1959, the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, Maryland,
has been training students in the methods and techniques of the
European Old Masters. Assuring that future generations of artists
receive the wisdom of the past while acquiring the creative freedom
that only the mastery of traditional skills can provide, is a goal
rarely achieved in other institutions. This four-year, nonaccredited
atelier school provides a lively atmosphere in which students receive
a high degree of personal attention. Drawing is stressed as a foundation
for the study of painting and sculpture. Emphasis is placed on the
mastery of the technical aspects of each discipline, such as the
grinding of powder pigments, the cooking of Maroger mediums, and
preparation of painting surfaces.
World Arts Focus
World Arts Focus (WAF) explores culture and builds community
through the practice and study of multicultural performing arts
traditions, with an emphasis on dance. Founded in 1992, World Arts
Focus has worked to expand access to performing arts experiences
and to provide programs for artists to further develop their craft.
Out of WAF, the studio facility Joe's Movement Emporium has emerged,
helping people experience art and culture through diverse classes
in dance including yoga, tai chi, flamenco, and belly dance. The
studio serves over 1200 adults and children per month in movement
classes, art education, workshops, rehersal space, performances,
special events, and community activities. WAF works with the city,
county and other non-profits to revitalize and promote an asset-building
approach to community development through the arts.
