Serenissima: The Worlds of Rick Shelley
Master of Mosaics, Puppeteer, Sculptor of Imaginary Spaces
Serenissima: The Worlds of Rick Shelley presents a rare overview of one of Baltimore’s most unique artists—a master of mosaics, a peerless puppeteer, and a sculptor of imaginary spaces. At the center of it all is Theater Serenissima itself, a golden “toy theater” in which the mythical founding of Venice is reenacted, or where a Commie-fearing nun expounds on the evils of poor hygiene.Performances take place weekends and evenings to tiny audiences of no more than 28 at a time. The Exhibition and Performances are located at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson. The Exhibition is on view through October 27. Upcoming performances are Saturday, October 6 at 2 and 4pm; Sunday, October 7 at 2, 4 and 6pm; Saturday, October 13 at 2 and 4pm; Saturday, October 20 at 2 and 4pm. For more information, call 410-276-1651.

Edward Hopper
National Gallery of Art
Edward Hopper (1882-1967) spent most of his life outdoors memorizing the effects of light on nature and buildings. The first thing you see when you walk into the exhibition of his work now on view at the National Gallery of Art is a painting of a large white house on a hill. Above that beautiful grand house, bathed in the pure white light of a sunlit day, is a quote by him in bold letters: "What I wanted to do was to paint sunlight on the side of a house." The very next piece you see, as you step into the first room, is a self portrait of Edward Hopper appearing to watch you as you look at him. It's all that simple, and that direct.
This exhibition on view at the National Gallery through January 21, 2008, is the first comprehensive survey of Edward Hopper's career seen outside New York in more than 25 years. Rhea spoke with Franklin Kelly of The National Gallety of Art about Mr. Hopper and this major look at his work.

Salon Art
Jack Livingston, Painter
This week's Salon Art is by painter Jack Livingston and is entitled, The Canyon Suite: New Paintings. Livingston's artwork is a series of gouaches on paper and linen that pays homage to the well-known symphonic jazz piece of the same name. Canyon Suite, the artwork, is representative of the abstract impressionistic work that Livingston created to reference scenes of the American West. The exhibition as a whole is a collaboration between Jack Livingston and performance poets Lauren Bender and Friends. It is on display at the Minas Gallery, 815 W. 36th Street, Baltimore, MD. The exhibition runs through October 28th and gallery hours are 11-6pm. The gallery is closed on Tuesdays. Contact 410-732-4258 for more information.
