Tony Shore
Black Velvet Paintings
Black Velvet Paintings have a strong connotation of being the underbelly of the art world—long considered tacky and unaesthetic to the high-brow art collector. But Baltimore artist Tony Shore feels a nostalgia and new possibility in this overlooked medium. Shore says that being part of two worlds, the blue-collar factory worker and the Ivy-leaguer, has allowed him to comfortably observe—more like an anthropologist than an artist—and bring those worlds together in his artwork. Tony Shore is the 2007 Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize Winner. He is also an adjunct professor at Maryland Institute College of Art. A solo show of Tony Shore's work will be on view for the month of January at the C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore. For more information, call 410-539-1080.

Foon Sham
Sculptor
Foon Sham's primary medium is wood. He collects wood from his many travels, taking only found pieces, never cutting down green trees, and turns these into travelogues and diaries of sorts of his experiences as an artist and a human. He does not necessarily design pieces to communicate with his viewers, but his sculptural language is so universal, it's easy to interact with his work. Currently, Mr. Sham's work is on view through November 11 at the Heineman Myers Contemporary Art, located at 4728 Hampden Lane in Bethesda. For more information, call 301-951-7900.

MOE
Maurice Bradford, Jr., Mixed Media Artist
Maurice Bradford, Jr., the artist known as MOE, is a native Baltimorean who uses several different forms of media to express his creativity. Whether attacking the canvas with a pallet knife, etching with only a pencil in hand, or clicking a mouse, MOE creates designs and images that map out themes that involve the adversities and pleasures of life. As an award-winning artist, MOE explores mature images that can be controversial but creates them in a whimsical and endearing fashion. He graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a B.A. in Art Education and in 2002, was honored as the Youth of the Year for the African American Visual Arts Association. MOE has his grand studio opening this weekend, October 19 – 21 at 3000 Druid Park Drive, Baltimore. For more information, call 410-446-7278 or go to his website listed below.
