Deja Vu? Revealing Repetition in French Masterpieces

The Walters Art Museum

Deja Vu"Deja Vu? Revealing Repetition in French Masterpieces" is currently on display at The Walters Art Museum through January 1, 2008. This exhibit is a gathering of some of the major artists of the 18th and 19th century in multiple examples of their works. Once you see two or more examples of say David's "Death of Marat" your eye will play with your brain, looking for the tiny differences between the paintings. Most of these works have never been shown before side by side; it's fascinating to see them together! Exhibit Curator Eik Kahng has spent literally years getting these paintings shipped from all over the globe to the Walters to be part of this exhibit. She joins Rhea in talking about "Deja Vu?" and gives us some clues where to look!

Hearts

CENTERSTAGE

Hearts"Hearts" is the new play running at the Head Theatre stage of CENTERSTAGE. Rhea welcomes playwright Willy Holtzman and director Tim Vasen to Artworks This Week to talk about the production and supply some insights about how the play came into being. "Hearts" runs at CENTERSTAGE through December 2.

Willy Richardson

Mask Maker

Willy RichardsonWilly Richardson is a mask maker extraordinaire. People who have collected his masks over the past 30 odd years treasure them as works of art. This is one of the times of year when masks are just "The Thing" to pull out of the box on the top shelf before that Halloween party, and happy are those who have an excuse to don a Willy Richardson mask. Recently we visited Willy in his workshop. As he was whipping up another batch of masks, he talked to us about his art.

Willy Richardson masks are available each year at outdoor arts festivals around town like the Fells Point Festival. BOO!

Devon Howard

Triple Threat Entertainer

Straight out of Baltimore, Maryland, Devon Howard is keeping it hot. As a singer, songwriter and producer he is a triple threat which places him way ahead of the game. Devon is walking in the footsteps of some of the most recognized artists out today who have all had an impact on his style. Baby Face, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, El DeBarge, Usher and Ne-Yo, all triple threats in their own right, he is influenced by new artists as well as the old. El DeBarge was the first male singer he related to vocally. His smooth, sensual, passionate voice was something he wanted to emulate as a singer, but with his own style. He is heavily influenced by Michael Jackson's innovative style and creativity. Devon Howard is a setting his own musical future with his first solo CD release entitled "The Other Side of the Bed."

Margaret Adams Parker, Printmaker and Sculptor

This Week's Salon Artist

Salon ArtThis week's salon art is by Margaret Adams Parker and it is from her current exhibition entitled, "Landscapes and Laments." In this exhibit, Ms. Parker uses images in woodcuts, etchings and sculptures to celebrate the beauty of the natural world alongside images of lament. The combination is wholly expressed in her quote, "I can only celebrate the beauty of the natural world and the joys of living when I also acknowledge the ways in which these gifts can be twisted and broken."

A graduate of Wellesley College with a Masters from American University, Ms. Parker won the Wolpoff Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Drawing and Works on Paper and the Glassman Award as Outstanding Woman Artist. One of her most noted sculptures, "Mary," is located at the College of Preachers on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral and was used on the bulletin for the 2005 Day of Reflection on Ending Global Poverty. More of her work can be seen in the "Landscapes and Laments" exhibit now on view through November 25 at Washington Printmakers Gallery, 1732 Connecticut Ave., N., Wash., DC. The gallery hours are Tues.-Thurs., 12-6pm, Fri., 12-9pm, and Sat.-Sun., 12-5pm. For more information call 202-332-7757.
