Black Panther Rank and File
Art and Photography Exhibition
Black Panther Rank and File is a major traveling exhibition that explores the association between contemporary art and social activism. In particular, it looks at the artistic influences of this controversial movement then and now. The multi-faceted exhibit showcases artwork, artifacts, video, numerous photos and more that were created by members of the movement and artists influenced by it.
One outstanding display is the photography of Steve Shames and Ilka Hartmann; their photos captured moments of the "rank and file" in the movement that were both public and private. To view this fascinating display of social consciousness and art mingled together, you may visit the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) where it is being showcased. The exhibition runs through December 16th in the Fox Building's Decker and Meyerhoff Galleries at 1303 Mount Royal Avenue. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday, noon to 5pm. For more information, call 410-225-2300 or visit the MICA website.

Designer Rick Rubin
Harris Rubin Furniture
Simplicity isn't simple. It takes a great deal of understanding to be understated. Harris Rubin Furniture is made in Baltimore and shipped all over the world. We talked with owner and designer Rick Rubin in his studio about his philosophy of design and watched as he and his team prepared some pieces for completion. (The photos we show of the finished pieces were shot by photographer Vincent Lupo of Direction One.)

Matisse: Painter as Sculptor An Interview with Claude Duthuit
The Baltimore Museum of Art
The long awaited exhibition "Matisse: Painter as Sculptor" is currently running at The Baltimore Museum of Art. This is the last stop in it's national tour and the only East Coast venue for this exhibit. This study of Matisse's sculpture aligned with his paintings is the largest exhibit of its kind in more than forty years in the United States. We were at the BMA one recent Monday when the museum was closed, shooting footage of the pieces and interviews with the curators for a special edition of Artworks This Week which will air on Wednesday January 2, 2008.
At one point we noticed the curators whispering excitedly "He's here! He's arrived!" We quickly found out that Henri Matisse's grandson Claude Duthuit had called the BMA over the weekend asking if it were possible for him and his wife to visit the exhibit that day. And so there he was, paying a visit to his grandfather's works and to the great national tribute which was being paid to Matisse. We were most fortunate when Mr. Duthuit consented to our request that he join Rhea on camera to talk about his grandfather, and here is that conversation for you to see this week on Artworks This Week. No one else has this story: just you, our viewers! Be sure to tune on on Wednesday January 2, 2008 for a full half hour Artworks This Week special edition on this amazingly beautiful exhibit. "Matisse: Painter as Sculptor" is on view at The Baltimore Museum of Art throgh February 3, 2008.

Helen Eisenstein
This Week's Salon Artist
Our salon artist this week is Helen Eisenstein. Ms. Eisenstein's work is presented in the exhibition entitled MEMORIES at the Carroll Museum. Presented by the Carroll Museum, Inc. and The Women Artists' Forum, MEMORIES is a recollection of Ms. Eisenstein's travels around the globe in vivid oils, watercolors and calligraphy. Born in Washington DC, Ms. Eisenstein attended area institutions to further her art background, including the Corcoran Gallery School of Art and The University of Maryland. While working in advertising and as an art director, she traveled extensively and collected her visions of gorgeous landscapes. They are gathered together for the first time in this exhibition. You may see this exhibition at the Carroll Museum located at 800 E. Lombard Street through Dec. 17th. The gallery is open to the public Wed.-Sun., noon-4pm or by calling 410-605-2964.

ArtChat
with Nate and Rhea
On ArtChat This Week, Nate and Rhea discuss the looming $2-billion dollar funding deficit facing the Smithsonian Museum. Reportedly the most immediate concern is building maintenance and the safely storing the thousands of artifacts kept throughout the Smithsonian complex. And just because we are public television, I have to give a plug for the award winning PBS series Arthur, which is coming to life on stage at the Hippodrome Theater: Arthur Live!, featuring none other than the world famous aardvark, is January 12th, 2008 at 11am, 2pm and 5pm.
