Avenue Q The Musical

The Hippodrome Theatre

Artworks GuestAvenue Q The Musical is currently on the boards at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre. This tour of the Broadway smash hit won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. This show features larger than life puppets who tell it all about trying to make it in New York. Making it big is tough even for a puppet!! You'll find this an evening of great fun and music, in a smart, sometmes risque sort of way. Nate welcomes one of (well, a couple of) the cast members from the production to Artworks to talk about the show. Note: Some ads for Avenue Q tell you to know that this might be more of a fun show for you to see rather than with your little kids... Avenue Q The Musical runs at The Hippodrome through December 23.

Steve Ross

New York Cabaret Artist

Artworks GuestOne of the joys of living in New York City (or within a train ride of NYC) is taking in its wide cultural possibilities. In addition to great theatre, great art galleries and super museums, New York after dark presents the discerning and lucky with the phenomenonal "cafe society" experience. Legendary destinations at places like The Waldorf, The St Regis and The Algonquin lure one to spaces dimmed for privacy, quiet conversation over drinks quietly tinkling - up or on the rocks - and focussing on ageless musical entertainment from writers like Cole Porter and George Gershwin.

Steve Ross has been a key player in New York's Cafe Society for over 20 years. When he's not holding court at The Algonquin he may be in London or Japan with his clever turns of phrase and flying fingers on the keys. Once a year Washington DC's Corcoran Gallery brings Steve Ross to town for a concert. Rhea caught up with him there for a chat and a song or two. If you missed him at the Corcoran, look him up in New York (or Amsterdam), or go to CDBaby.com and get one of his cds.

The Nutcracker

by Septime Webre

Artworks GuestSeptime Webre's vintage take on The Nutcracker transports us back in time to historic Washington and an A-list party on the Potomac starring George Washington as the heroic Nutcracker, King George as the villainous Rat King, swirling snowflakes, to die-for costumes and Tchaikovsky's beloved score. When the curtain rises on the second act, the stage bursts with waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing sugar plums and other enchanting adaptations that have made Webre's Nutcracker a Washington tradition with raves from the critics and sold-out crowds. This is a holiday-season must-see and a great gift idea. The Nutcracker runs through December 23 at the Warner Theater in Washington, DC. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster.

All Faiths Beautiful

Rebecca Hoffberger, American Visionary Art Museum

Artworks Guest"All Faiths Beautiful" consists of 500+ highly personal works of art on the subject of belief with a special emphasis on those who honor the beauty in faiths other than their own. Be it deeply personal and whole, a work in progress, a torment or a blessing, what we believe - and especially what we don't - is our most precious life-shaping human experience. Freedom to express that belief is central to any notion of individual liberty.

The "All Faiths Beautiful" exhibition is a communal invitation to the public of all ages to deepen their own exploration of personal, idiosyncratic, and traditional belief. The exhibition includes artists from a great range of belief traditions as well as those "rogue religionists" who have invented their very own! The exhibition features diverse works by the likes of Alex Grey, Mona Webb, Edith Valentine Tenbrink, Julia Butterfly Hill, Pamela Smith and other artistic, social, and even scientific visionaries. "All Faiths Beautiful" is curated by the museum's founder and director, Rebecca Alban Hoffberger, with the inspired help of a small army of theologians, scientists, moral philosophers, and articulate non-believers. "All Faiths Beautiful" is on view through August 2008. The American Visionary Museum is located at 800 Key Highway in Baltimore. For more information, call 410-244-1900.

The Marriage of Art: Jody and Carl Wright

This Week's Salon Artists

Salon ArtThe salon art in our studio is representative of The Marriage of Art Exhibit in more ways than one. It features the collaboration of beautiful paintings and one sculpture from two artists who by chance, happen to be married! They are Jody and Carl Wright and their artwork comes to us by way of the Ed Chasen Fine Art Gallery of Georgetown. Ms. Jody Wright is well-known for her colorful animal companion paintings but she has painted bold and bright subjects on canvas that range from florals to companion animals to Victorian Architecture. Influenced by Georgia O'Keefe, she attempts to move the audience to take a closer look at what is considered ordinary to find the soul of the piece that lies beneath. Her companion in life, Mr. Carl Wright carves stone sculptures out of alabaster, marble and limestone to make visual sensations which are a perfect combination for Ms. Wright paintings. He hand carves and finishes in wax abstract figures that are long lasting and known for evoking emotion and stability. The Marriage of Art exhibit opens December 15th and runs through January 1st at Ed Chasen Fine Art of Georgetown. The address is 2906 M. Street, NW in Washington, DC. Gallery hours are Tues.ýThurs., 10-5pm, Fri. and Sat., 10-10pm, and Sun., 12-6pm. Appointments can be arranged by calling 202-965-1801.
