The Turn of the Screw
at Everyman Theatre
This psychological thriller, based on Henry James' novel, challenges viewers to determine whether a series of sinister, unexplained events are the work of malevolent ghosts or are figments of the imagination of the young, impressionable governess. In this adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher, Megan Anderson plays the governess, while Bruce R. Nelson takes on three roles: an innocent (or chillingly cunning?) boy, the mysterious uncle and a middle-aged housekeeper. Anderson and Nelson are guests on this week's AWTW. The Turn of the Screw runs through Feb. 24, 2008, at Everyman Theatre.

Garner vs. ...
The Trial of a Fugitive Slave Mother
It was the trial of the century, a story immortalized by a classic poem, a painting, an opera, a movie and most notably Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved. The story of Margaret Garner is about a distraught slave mother, who rather than see her child suffer the indignities of slavery, chose to kill her. The legal ramifications of the case of Margaret Garner are finding new life in a play written by Susan Bowen entitled Garner vs. ... The Trial of a Fugitive Slave Mother. An added crochet to the story, it is performed by those who would most certainly understand the controversies that the decision from this court proceeding might have generated - modern-day judges and attorneys.
The Maryland Chapter of the Federal Bar Association presents a dramatic reading of Garner vs. ... The Trial of a Fugitive Slave Mother in the Ceremonial Courtroom at the United States Courthouse, 101 West Lombard Street in Baltimore, MD on February 1, 2008. The play and following reception are from 5-8pm. This reading is free and open to the public but reservations are required for seating. To obtain reservations, contact C. Reilly at 410-949-1155 or e-mail creilly@zuckerman.com.

The Art Committee
of Baywoods of Annapolis
Baywoods of Annapolis is a full service assisted living facility. Set on a beautiful campus, the true treasure is its residents. The talent and creativity assembled under one roof was hidden until resident Margaret Burroughs wanted to present her husband's photographs from his time as an AP Photographer. With no group in charge, Margaret took up the reins and founded the Art Committee of Baywoods. Since its inception, the Committee arranged viewings of works by both local artists and national artists. In addition to the in-house exhibitions, the group coordinates visits to local galleries and museums and provides lectures based on the current exhibition. Currently on view through the end of February is the work of Werner Drewes, a German artist best known for his woodcut prints. One of his sons is a resident at Baywoods. For more information about Baywoods of Annapolis, call 410-268-9222.

Hai-Ou Hou, Painter
This Week's Salon Artist
Our salon art this week is by Hai-Ou Hou. There is a resurgence of commissioned oil portraits of late and painter Hai-Ou Hou may very well be one of the reasons for it. Her paintings are depictions that are vivid in color and have the knack of pulling out the best of a person's inner self. She says, "Isn't that what paintings are suppose to do?" Hai-ou, a graduate of the Central Institute of Fine Art and Design and former professor at Hubei Fine Arts Institute of Wuhan in China, uses her flamboyant, passionate nature and artistic talents to meld a business that is as much art as it is business. Upon doing commissioned work, a part of her contract provides that clients having a showing to "introduce" the piece and herself to potential future clients. It works. The shows give others the opportunity to see her work up close and personal in their desired setting. If you would like to see Hai-Ou Hou's paintings, she is continually displayed at Gallery International on 523 N. Charles Street in Baltimore, MD. Gallery Hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 12-4pm or you can call for an appointment.

ArtChat
with Nate and Rhea
On ArtChat This Week, Nate and Rhea discuss Youthlight, a Baltimore based photography program that received a major honor this week. It was one of 14 arts programs for at-risk-youth that received the national "Coming Up Taller Award" from First Lady Laura Bush at the White House. The theatrical company that manages the Hippodrome theater has been sold to a New York investment company for more than $90-million dollars. And we reflect on the life and legacy of Maryland artist Les Harris.
ArtWorks This Week is made possible by the members of MPT. Thank you for your generous support!
