Caroline G. Gibson
Soprano and Founder of Twin Productions
Dr. Caroline G. Gibson, DMA, soprano has a specific goal to share with the American public. She wants to promote the awareness of the Negro Spiritual as a uniquely American genre originated or inspired by African Americans. To achieve this goal, she has founded Twin Productions, a company with the specific purpose of introducing the liberating and inspirational power of Black art songs, especially Negro Spirituals. Through lecture recitals, master classes, concerts, CDs, documentary DVDs, booklets and pamphlets, audiences may experience the Negro Spiritual while learning about the historical contributions of Blacks in America. Her new CD, On Ma Journey Now, has a collection of classic Negro Spirituals including the very popular, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. As a companion to this CD, Dr. Gibson has completed a DVD, entitled, The Making of On Ma Journey Now. Both are available on her website.

High School Musical
at the Hippodrome
It was a hit Disney Channel movie and now Disney Theatrical Productions brings the phenomenon of High School Musical to the stage. In the Broadway Across America series, the story of High School Musical takes to the stage with new-found excitement and promises to deliver a quite a bang. It's the same sweet story of two teenagers, Troy and Gabriella, who find young love and endure high school pressures but with new songs and a whole lot more spunk. The characters are all the same, but new faces give audiences a second chance to fall for this hit. High School Musical will be showing at the Hippodrome Theater at 12 N. Eutaw Street in Baltimore, MD through March 2nd. Show schedules are listed on their website.

Tony Shore
Black Velvet Paintings
Black Velvet Paintings have a strong connotation of being the underbelly of the art world—long considered tacky and unaesthetic to the high-brow art collector. But Baltimore artist Tony Shore feels a nostalgia and new possibility in this overlooked medium. Shore says that being part of two worlds, the blue-collar factory worker and the Ivy-leaguer, has allowed him to comfortably observe—more like an anthropologist than an artist—and bring those worlds together in his artwork. Tony Shore is the 2007 Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize Winner. He is also an adjunct professor at Maryland Institute College of Art. The artist’s work can be seen at C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore until Feb. 23rd. For more information, call 410-539-1080.

This Week's Salon Art:
Emotions, The Parish Gallery
The Salon Art on our walls this week is from the Parish Gallery. Parish Gallery of Georgetown, founded by Norman Parish, opened in 1991 and is dedicated to showcasing primarily, but not exclusively, contemporary visual artists of significance from Africa and the African Diaspora. Presently, the gallery is showcasing a juried photographic exhibition entitled, Emotions. In this show, 11 photographers reshape the visual experience and challenge the viewer to look closely at how they view the world around them. Our Salon Art includes photographs from this exhibit as well as art from other artists presenting in the Parish Gallery. If you would like to view more of the Emotions exhibit and see other artists’ collections, you may visit the gallery at 1054 31st Street, NW in Washington, DC. The Emotions exhibit is through February 29th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6pm.
