Haiti section
Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief Governments, organizations and nonprofits around the world are mobilizing to provide relief to Haiti. There are many ways to give-contributing money, donating new or gently used items, or sharing your time. However you give, the experience is more satisfying when you support nonprofits that share your values, are doing work that's important to you, and use your gifts wisely.
Determine what kind of relief you want to support. "Disaster relief" has many faces-emergency housing, provision of potable water, medical assistance, feeding the hungry, sending in search and rescue teams. Decide which one(s) you want to give to.
If you already have an organization in mind and are familiar with its Web site, you can do your research there. Be careful, however, if you haven't been to the site before or don't know the organization well. Con artists often post bogus Web sites and run scam donation campaigns immediately after a disaster. Use a reputable source, such as GuideStar, Network for Good or JustGive, to identify charities doing the work you want to support. All of the charities listed on these sites are recognized by the IRS, and you can contribute directly from the sites.
Extensive efforts are underway to track and monitor the spread of the flu. The CDC and state health departments are also taking aggressive action to respond to the H1N1 (Swine) flu virus. A pandemic has been declared. Vaccines are the best tool we have to prevent influenza. The CDC encourages people to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza as soon as vaccines become available. Learn more about the H1N1 (Swine) flu, Seasonal flu and Prescription Medications at http://www.flu.gov.
