Uncle Tom

Did you know that the main inspiration for Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a man who lived in Bethesda, Maryland? Josiah Henson, who was enslaved in a plantation off of Old Georgetown Road in the 1800s, eventually produced a manuscript about his life, which Harriet Beecher Stowe drew from heavily when she penned her famous novel.

Montgomery Parks is currently renovating the property, and it's slated to open to the public as a park in 2020. Their hope is that visitors leave with a greater understanding of Reverend Henson’s accomplishments, as well as Stowe’s original depiction of Uncle Tom.

The new Josiah Henson Museum is slated to open to the public in 2020.
