Voices of Baltimore: Black, White and Gray

D. Watkins

Born and raised in East Baltimore, author and professor D. Watkins was one of many longtime residents who took to the streets in April of 2015. Critical of the media’s representations of what transpired, D. spoke about the positive aspects of the unrest in his writings and appearances during this time.

Encouraging others to learn about the history and context of their personal experiences, Watkins pledges his love for Baltimore in his interview and expresses his intention to stay. Although he plans to keep writing, he says he is dedicating his life to bringing greater literacy and critical thinking skills to the city.
