Noted Presidential Campaign Manager and Journalist Donna Brazile to Speak on the State of Politics in the U.S. at the Y of Central Maryland

On Friday, February 10, 2012, Donna Brazile, veteran democratic political strategist, adjunct professor, author, syndicated columnist and television political commentator, will speak at the Weinberg Family Center Y to discuss “Inspiring Civility in the National Political Discourse.”

A political visionary, Brazile has worked on every presidential campaign from 1976 to 2000, when she served as campaign manager for former U.S. Vice President Al Gore. She is also the first African-American woman to manage a presidential campaign.

Contradiction Dance will perform the audience-favorite production, The Present. Premiered in October 2011, The Present delighted audience members of all ages with its exploration of joy, energy and vulnerability. Leap Day 2012 is an indoors field day promoting physical fitness for area homeschoolers and preschoolers. Admission is $5 per family to help defray costs; waived for volunteers. Students receive participation incentives. Parents take home a goody bag of freebies and fitness ideas. Families may receive door prizes such as a Wii Fit accessory, videos, books, & sports-themed toys. Little kids enjoy their own enclosed mini-trampoline & bounce house. Daughan will present his latest work, 1812: The Navy’s War (Basic Books; October 4, 2011). Collectors Faith and Edward Deming Andrews spent nearly 40 years (1920s-1960s) gathering a range of objects from Shaker communities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York. Objects from this collection will be on view in “Gather up the Fragments: The Andrews Shaker Collection” at St. John’s College’s Mitchell Gallery from March 2 to April 19. This exhibition showcases furniture and art traditionally associated with the Shakers, as well as the small objects, manuscripts, and tools that formed the warp and weft of their daily lives.

The Capitol Steps, an irreverent musical-theater troupe from Washington, D.C., will perform in a fundraiser at St. John’s College to benefit student aid. The show will include a lively review of songs and spoofs that ridicule public figures across all party lines. The performance, which will be followed by a reception with the performers, will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium on Saturday, March 3. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $55 in advance, $60 at the door ($35 tax deductible). For best seats, order tickets early.

DiCoplio Writing Workshops will host an intensive, short story-writing weekend from Friday, March 9, through Sunday, March 11. The weekend includes five mini-workshops on elements of writing fiction, presented by Maryland short-story writer and playwright Chris Copley, plus time to write a 1,000- to 2,000-word short story. Participants will stay at Adventure Inn, just west of Harpers Ferry, W.Va. All meals and snacks are included and will be prepared on site. Registration is $200 to $275, depending on accommodations; there's also a commuters' rate of $150.
