Kid Field Trip: THE LADY MARYLAND
Ahoy,
Vid Kids! One windy day, Bob took a fun-filled voyage around the Chesapeake
Bay aboard the Lady Maryland. He joined the crew and many students aboard
this historic PUNGY SCHOONER, and learned a lot about the boat and the
bay waters beneath it.
This is what Bob learned:
- A PUNGY
SCHOONER is a Chesapeake Bay cargo vessel which sailed in the 1800's.
- The left
side of a boat is called the STARBOARD side, and the right side of a
boat is called the PORT side.
- Some marine
life like salty water and others like fresh water. The water in a bay
is made up of both fresh water from rivers, and salty water from the
ocean. A bay's mixed water is called BRACKISH, and is home to special
bay fish and grasses.
- You should
always wet your hands before holding a fish so you DON'T RUB OFF THE
SLIME! A fish's outside coating of slime protects it from disease.
