There are many organizations that you can turn to for help in supporting your child on the path to reading.

These are just a few of them.

  • The U.S. Department of Education has prepared a comprehensive booklet for parents called Helping Your Child Become a Reader.
  • The University of Calgary sponsors this site — full of links to resources for parents.
  • PBS's Reading Rockets has a great deal of information about families and reading.
  • The American Library Association offers many links to information on the web for parents who want to help their children become readers.
  • The Partnership for Families in Education offers a list of things parents can do to help their children get ready to read and ready to learn.
  • The U.S. Department of Education posted this information about the mental processes behind learning to read.
  • Scholastic maintains this site, which links to what they consider to be the most important web sites for children's literature.
  • Read original stories and articles for parents of readers at the online magazine Parents and Children Together, a publication of the Family Literacy Center at the ERIC Clearinghouse for Reading, English and Communication.
  • The Dalton School in New York has an especially rich web site for families reading together.
