Why this is important

  • infants & reading

  • toddlers & reading

  • preschoolers & reading

  • children who can read
    with some help

  • children who read
    independently

  • WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

What your children know now can often be used to predict how easy it will be for them to master reading once they are in school. Here are three key skills that spell success:

  •
  • They know the letters of the alphabet. They can recognize and say them.
  •
  • They know they ways a book is written. They can point out the front and back of a book. They know how to hold it (right-side up). They know that people read from the front to the back of the book, and from the left side to the right side of the page.
  •
  • They know that words have sounds.

If you have spent time reading to your children since they arrived in your family, they will have these skills-and many more. They will know that you think reading is important. They will also know how much you care for them because you have given them the gift of reading.
