Why this is important

  • infants & reading

  • toddlers & reading

  • preschoolers & reading

  • children who can read
    with some help

  • children who read
    independently

  • SOME THINGS YOU MIGHT DO TOGETHER

  • Create a family history of reading in a special notebook. Write down favorite books for all family members at different points in their life. Decorate the text with drawings based on the book or pictures cut from magazines.

  • See if you can work with local schools or volunteer organizations to read to other people who are just starting on the road to reading.

  • Put on plays based on the books you have read. Involve all the family in writing the script, choosing the costumes and actors, and putting together a program for the people who come to the play.

  • Go online to investigate reading activities. You might start right here with Reading Rainbow's online activities related to the book Desert Giant: the World of the Saguaro Cactus.Other book-related activities will be posted here in the future. Check this site often to find the latest.

  • Talk about words together, and find out how they came into our language. You can use a dictionary to find out this information. It's also available online.

  • Pick a family word of the day. Every family member has to use the word at least once in their conversation.
