BUILDING ON BOOKS

One of the ways to increase your children's understanding of the books you read together is to create experiences based on them.

In this video clip, Dia Michels makes green eggs and ham with her children after they have read Dr. Seuss' classic book, Green Eggs and Ham.

HAVE SOME FAMILY FUN

Have your kids ever refused to even try a bite of a new food? Then Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss is the book for you. Read the book together and then try out the recipe. What do you think your kids will tell Sam-I-Am? Did they like this unusual treat?

To make green eggs and ham, you'll need:

  • Slices of ham
  • One egg per person
  • Green food dye
  • Butter (1/2 teaspoon per egg)
  • Two non-stick frying pans
  • Round cookie cutter

Cover the bottom of one frying pan with water to the depth of about 1/3 inch. Add two drops of green food color. Place ham slices in the water to heat for 3 - 5 minutes over low heat.

Separate an egg for each person into the yolk and the white. Add green food coloring to the yolk and stir it together until the color is evenly distributed.

Heat pan and melt butter. Put the round cookie cutter in the center of the pan and pour the white around it. Pour green yolk into the cookie cutter. Allow the yolk to set briefly and remove the cookie cutter. Continue cooking.

Serve one egg and a slice of ham to each person. Enjoy!
