GOING TO THE LIBRARY

In this clip, Zulma Sum and her family go to the library.

HAVE SOME FAMILY FUN

The local public library has some really great opportunities for all family members.

Plan a trip to your library with your children. You can use the phone book or the Internet to find a local library, its location, and hours of operation. Use a search engine such as Google. Put in your state's name followed by "public libraries."

Each library will have a different system, but you should be able to get a library card for your children. Encourage your children to pick their own books. Having lots of books around the house will help them learn more about reading.

If you are stumped about picking a book, look around on the shelves or ask a librarian. They will be able to help you find many books.

Some public libraries also offer reading hours or other book and story experiences for your children. Ask for a schedule of events when you go to visit.

And be sure to check out some books for yourself. When you read at home, your children see that you like to read as well. It encourages them to read for themselves.
