In My Own Words

Getting ready to read

  • Pick a cozy space with good light where children can sit or sprawl to listen to the story. Fill the area with pillows, floor mats, or squares of soft carpeting so kids will be comfortable as they listen. Choose a special "reading chair" for yourself.

  • Use the same space whenever you read aloud. This helps infuse story time with a sense of excitement, mystery, and awe. It also lets children know what behavior you expect from them.

  • Select a book ahead of time. If you have a chance, read through it once or twice on your own. Knowing what to expect from a book makes it easier to read aloud.

  • Turn off music and other distractions.

  • Gather children in a semicircle around you so they can see the pictures. (Having them in front of you also helps keep them focused. If their attention starts to wander, you can bring them back by making eye contact as you read.)

  • Read the title and author's name aloud, and look at the cover together. Ask: "What do you think this book is about?" Talk about your children's predictions.
