What to do before you view
- Carefully select what your group will watch. Will
it help children understand and explore their world?
Will it encourage the development of their social
skills? Will it awaken their curiosity and expand
their horizons? Quality children's television should
do all of these.
- If you have a chance, watch the program ahead of
time or check your local TV guide for a summary. Knowing
what to expect makes it easier to plan appropriate
activities to follow.
- Build up a sense of excitement among your kids.
If you're planning on watching a special on lions,
talk about lions before it airs. What does your group
already know? What questions do they have? What predictions
can they make about what they'll see? By discussing
the subject ahead of time, you make it easier for
children to absorb new information.
- Consider showing a short video clip instead of a
whole program or tape. Match the clip to something
your children have recently investigated, or use it
to open a discussion or activity.
