Ready to Learn

PBS Ready To Learn was launched in 1994 and represents public television's response to the National Education goal to ensure that "No Child is Left Behind" especially when it comes to preparing preschool children for formal schooling.

One of the goals of Ready To Learn is to teach parents, teachers and childcare providers that early literacy skills can be developed at a very young age and can be taught at home and in child care settings. PBS Ready To Learn has developed a model called the VIEW, READ and DO Model of Learning where children can learn a concept by viewing a pre-selected clip of a television program and combine that experience with reading a related book and participating in a hands-on activity.

This three-pronged approach to learning helps adults who care for young children use the best resources available to not only teach social, emotional and cognitive development but foster a love of reading and begin to teach those early literacy skills necessary for children to be successful in school.

As part of this service, MPT offers: Elmo

Share a Story

PBS Kids Share A Story and MPT

Don't miss Share A Story Theme Week, September 15 - 19

The PBS KIDS Share a Story campaign was developed to heighten awareness about a young child's ability to learn pre-literacy concepts by storytelling and how to practice these skills at home, in child care settings or anywhere children and adults learn together. Sharing a story with children does more than you think to help kids learn how to read! Take a look at how storytelling inspires all kids to love reading what ever the age:

  • Toddlers: Learning to Love Books
By reading to toddlers you teach them that books are special and fun to use.

  • Preschool: Filling their World with Words
By reading to Preschoolers you help establish predictability in their world by reading and rereading their favorite books everyday,

  • Kindergarten: Discovering the Written Word
By reading with Kindergartners you can read books together and broaden their knowledge and vocabulary.

  • First Grade: Cracking the Code of Words
By reading with First Graders you help them develop comprehension skills by discussing the book before, during and after reading.

PBS stations around the country are encouraging everyone to read aloud storybooks to children. For new members to MPT, we'll include PBS Share a Story Booklets in your new member packet. Look for PBS "Share A Story" materials in all Ready To Learn and Ready To Grow Workshops. Take time out to "Share a Story" and the love of reading! You'll be glad you did!
