2001 Mazda B4000 Cab Plus 4
Date: 30 June 2001
Miles: 4,300

This is the time of year we at MotorWeek are producing many of the segments that will be seen in the fall and winter. And that means moving props and gear big time. And there's no crossover vehicle or SUV that can substitute for a good old fashioned pickup truck. But, our 2001 Mazda B4000 Cab Plus 4 can hardly be called old-fashioned. Complete with an extended cab, a pair of rear doors, and a 6-foot bed, it should meet our needs to carry people and properties with ease. We'll let you know how this sensible-sized pickup truck fares with us over the next few months.

Flexibility in handling a variety of human cargo and whatever they want to bring along is why most compact pickups sold have extended cabs like our Mazda B4000 Cab Plus 4. And in accumulating nearly 3,000 miles in only a month, there is no shortage of log book comments. For instance, that the interior fit and finish is top notch, and that the B4000 is far easier to drive than a full-size pickup. Also, fuel economy at 21.0 miles per gallon puts a bigger pickup to shame. It does seem the B4000 is more at home around town than on long distance trips, however. One driver commented about the poor on-center steering feel, and somewhat bouncy ride. On the other hand, the folding rear jump seats were popular with staffer's younger children as their size was deemed to be just right. The two rear clam shell doors allow that space to be put to better use as a high and dry area for luggage and other cargo that wouldn't be secure out back. All while retaining a larger pickup bed than most buyers will ever use most of the time. The Mazda B4000 - all that you want a small pickup to be, and more.
