We're still settling in with our 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedan. This American-made Sonata has all you need in a mid-size family sedan. Strong power from a 235-horsepower V6, and with everything from ABS brakes, stability control, and curtain airbags standard, on even the base model, it is the segment's safety leader.
There are no mechanical problems after only two months and 4,440 miles. Interior plastic and vinyl that look too much so are our only complaint. And we'll give its to-date fuel economy of 19.1 miles per gallon the benefit of the doubt. So, for now, we're still singing Sonata's praises.

Our 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedan has also been a refreshing change. The American-made Sonata has everything you need in a mid-size family sedan, and nothing you don't. With everything from ABS brakes, stability control, and curtain airbags standard, on even the base model, it is the segment's safety leader. Our staff praises its roomy interior for five, the huge well appointed trunk, and solid details like supportive seats, a great stereo, and large cupholders. An awkwardly styled center dash stack is one of few negatives.
Then there is the above average driving performance. This is one family sedan that doesn't apologize for ride and handing. Plus our gutsy V6 Sonata returns a good, if not spectacular, 23.0 miles per gallon after 3 months and 10,600 miles. Sonata is our 2006 Drivers' Choice pick as Best Family Sedan and it earned it.

Some cars get more praise than they deserve, and some cars get less. That's our feeling about the 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedan. Hyundai's first American-made car is an outstanding family sedan at a price that the competition can't match. But lots of people just haven't discovered the Sonata yet. Too bad. Our leather-lined LX has been in our fleet for almost 5 months and 13,000 miles and we have almost total praise. It's easy to drive, very comfortable, and just the right size for most duties. The gutsy, optional 235-horsepower V6 leaves few performance wants, plus returns 22.9 miles per gallon of regular grade.
And you feel secure driving it. With everything from ABS brakes, traction and stability control, and curtain airbags standard, on even the base model, it is the segment's safety leader.
As for its generous warranties, so far we haven't needed them since our Sonata has been trouble free. Sonata is our 2006 Drivers' Choice pick as Best Family Sedan, and that says it all.

Hyundai has come a long way in the last decade. From disappointing quality and uninspired styling, to some of the best made, best looking rides from any brand.
Case in point, the 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedan. Hyundai's first car made in the USA is an outstanding, high value family 4-door. Our LX has been in our fleet for 8 months and 17,000 miles, and except for a somewhat tinny sound system, we've nothing to complain about.
The available 235-horsepower V6 delivers great initial and mid-range power. Economy is good too, at 23.2 miles-per-gallon of regular grade, and still rising.
Hyundai is known for its long warranties. Fortunately, we haven't needed them since our Sonata has been trouble free. We picked the Sonata as our 2006 Drivers' Choice winner for Best Family Sedan, and we're glad we did.

The Hyundai Sonata sedan was MotorWeek's Drivers' Choice Best Family Sedan winner for 2006. And, after 10 months and 17,800 miles of duty, we continue to be enthusiastic.
We think the stereo sounds a bit tinny, and for that matter we find the dash design only mildly attractive. But, otherwise, the Sonata is as reliable a family appliance as any other car on the market.
Plus, standard side impact and curtain airbags, ABS, stability control, and 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, give owners great peace of mind at a value price.
The available 235-horsepower V6 delivers a strong level of power for passing, with 22.9 miles-per-gallon fuel economy on regular grade.
The Sonata is Hyundai's first car made in the USA, and it's a true family sedan bargain.

We've ended our year with this Hyundai Sonata, our MotorWeek's Drivers' Choice Best Family Sedan winner for 2006. And, after 20,000 hard miles, we continue to be sing its praises
Granted, the Sonata's styling is pretty generic, but then an inoffensive design appeals to a lot of buyers. Inside, a little more
styling could be applied to the instrument panel and its computer tower-like center stack. But the interior is very comfortable, with only a tinny sounding stereo as a distraction.
Reliability has been total, while the available 235-horsepower V6 delivers a strong power and good 23.1 miles-per-gallon fuel economy on regular gas.
But what really makes the Sonata a standout is its commitment to occupant safety with standard side impact and curtain airbags, ABS, and stability control. Add in a 100,000 powertrain warranty, and the American-made Hyundai Sonata is an easy choice.
