The Truth about Cancer

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

This intensely emotional documentary by award-winning filmmaker Linda Garmon sets out to find the truth about cancer—Is it the same deadly killer it was thirty years ago, or are we making progress? The ninety-minute film tells the story of Garmon’s husband’s fight with cancer, interwoven with the stories of three other cancer patients as they and their families find themselves entrenched in this decades-long war with the disease. After years of research aimed towards fighting the disease, writer, producer, and director Garmon wants to know, “Why does anyone still die of cancer?” She and her crew investigate numerous Boston area hospitals and find out startling information about modern day survival rates and the limited success of drugs and clinical trials. The truth is that knowledge is only half the battle—the success of a fight with cancer depends greatly on the biology of the cancer cells themselves, as well as their susceptibility to treatment. The film is to be followed up by a half-hour panel discussion by leading medical professionals who will present the benefits of preventative treatment and screenings, as well as breakthroughs in cancer treatment and medical technology.

MPT is proud to partner with the American Cancer Society, the Frederick Public Library System, LifeBridge Health and the Maryland Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to provide community outreach based around this documentary.
