Women and Girls Lead

Maryland Public Television has teamed up with the Women & Girls Lead campaign, headed by the Independent Television Service. An International Public Media initiative, Women & Girls Lead tells the stories of women and girls around the world through digital media. MPT will air several specials detailing the struggles and triumphs of women from all walks of life under this campaign.

Women's History Month

The month of March brings lots of attention to women in Maryland and beyond. Here are some upcoming broadcast programs and online and in-community activities that celebrate women from all over the world and from all parts of history.

BROADCAST PROGRAMMING

Pioneers of Television: Funny Ladies

Airs 3/11 at 9:30 PM on MPT-HD

This episode features the first standup comediennes to appear on television - legends such as Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers. It also looks at Lucille Ball's breakthrough on "I Love Lucy" and the sitcom stars who followed, including Mary Tyler Moore, Betty White and Marla Gibbs. The episode covers television's most enduring variety star, Carol Burnett, and features interviews with contemporary actresses including Tina Fey and Margaret Cho.

Extraordinary Women

Airs 3/20 and 3/26 at 8 PM on MPT-HD

They seemed to have it all - glamour, power, wealth and adoration. Grace Kelly, Wallis Simpson, Josephine Baker, Agatha Christie…these were the pioneers who showed that a woman could be the equal of any man. But behind the public success, there was so often private heartache and personal tragedy. Featuring archive, interviews and dramatic re-enactment, this series reveals the price these extraordinary women paid for their achievements. Yet in the end, they overcame all adversities to emerge as triumphant, inspirational icons of the 20th Century.
