NEW SEASON PREMIERE! Fall Festival Theme: Music. Peabody pianist Xiaohui Yang, Young Artists of America: The Songs of Tim Rice, and pipe organist rock star Cameron Carpenter.

Maryland Public Television's Artworks series returns for a seventh season on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 pm. exclusively on MPT. This fall, the 30-minute weekly shows feature a rich range of arts themes including music, eccentrics, sculpture, drawing, fashion, photography, performance, painting, and young artists. Some of the profiled artists are famous, some are just emerging; all showcase remarkable originality.

Rhea Feikin, host of the series, will be joined later (December) in the new season by a distinguished roster of co-hosts, representing arts organizations from the greater Baltimore-Washington area.

Xiaohui YangThe kickoff shows for Season 7 focuses on music and eccentrics. The premiere episode features a profile of Xiaohui Yang, a virtuoso pianist and doctoral student at the Peabody Institute, who has been making magic with a keyboard since she was 6 years old. One non-local segment showcases a rock star pipe organist named Cameron Carpenter. His controversial persona brings pipe organ music to an entirely new level as he travels the world with his own custom made instrument. In episode 2, we go on to discover the hidden work of Sister Corita Kent, whose pop-art from the 1960s places her in the pantheon of major 20th century artists.

Portrait of Michelle ObamaOther episodes feature a range of quirky, famous and fringe artists. Episode 3, Sculpture, includes a profile of Heidi Hoy, a bronze sculptor who creates unique works of beauty out of an unforgiving medium. Episode 5, Fashion, highlights an exhibition dedicated to the work of legendary costumer designer, Edith Head. Episode 8 showcases painters, including Baltimore’s own Amy Sherald, who captured the historic commission to paint the portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Artworks will air a special episode on Friday, November 16th titled JOHN WATERS: An Artworks Special with Rhea Feikin. The exclusive special will feature a freewheeling conversation between the famous cult filmmaker, visual artist, and author John Waters and his longtime friend, Artworks co-host Rhea Feikin. Filmed on location in his art studio, the lively conversation focuses on Water’s visual art and books and includes a reading from one of Water’s recent publications. The special episode is scheduled to broadcast during the exhibition of Water’s landmark retrospective at the Baltimore Museum of Art called John Waters: Indecent Exposure.
