Episode Description

  • Each year in May, buyers from around the world flock to Baltimore County in search of the next big thing in thoroughbred horse racing. We'll go behind the scenes of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year- Olds in Training Sale, where more than 400 horses are up for auction. These thoroughbreds can be pricey—some sell for more than a million dollars—but their future in racing might be worth that price tag.
  • On a warm spring afternoon, farmer Ed Heikis drives his sprayer through a field of wheat at Belle Aire Farms in Talbot County. But the herbicide he's spraying isn't meant to kill weeds—it's supposed to kill the wheat itself. Ed grows this wheat as a cover crop to improve soil health and keep nutrients and sediment out of waterways and the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Baltimore City is not known for its farms, but Frederick Douglass High School teachers Amanda Briody and Chris Jennings are looking to change that. They started a small farm in the back of the school to teach students about plant science, the business of agriculture, and healthy living.
  • The Local Buy: Al Spoler travels to the Potomac Sprout Company, an innovative indoor sprout farm in Thurmont. Brothers Chris and Wesley Yu explain how in just five days they go from seed to sprout—and, eventually, to a spring roll.
