Episode Description

  • Wicomico County farmer Lee Richardson explains why the Eastern Shore's most readily available natural fertilizer—chicken manure—can't always be applied on farm fields to help crops grow.
  • We visit the Jessup Produce Market, a 330-thousand square foot facility that offers customers produce grown around the world. But not all of the produce comes from far away. Local farmer Ian Seletzky of Richfield Farm in Carroll County sends some of his produce there through local wholesale distributor Edward G. Rahll and Sons—and in the process, has the chance to get his crop in front of customers he would never have attracted on his own.
  • This summer, Maryland was host to the 2017 National Conservation Foundation Envirothon competition—meaning, the normally quiet Misty Meadow Farm Creamery in Washington County welcomed hundreds of high school students from across the United States, Canada, and China. The event gave students a chance to learn why Maryland farmers are considered leaders in land stewardship.
  • The Local Buy: Al Spoler visits The Greener Garden, an urban farm that takes up an entire block of the Hamilton Hills neighborhood of Baltimore City, before getting a taste of an original eggplant dish cooked up by farmer Lavette Blue.
