Episode Description

  • On Carla King’s farm in Anne Arundel County, her border collies are much more than friendly companions. They’re also indispensable farm employees that herd Carla’s flock of sheep far more efficiently than any human could.
  • Planting tall grass and berry bushes at Twin Oak Farms in Worcester County is not just an aesthetic choice. These bushes reduce the farm’s environmental impact by helping to capture poultry house emissions. Plus, the berries make for some sweet jam.
  • Many farm dogs seem to have the run of the land, but they’ve certainly earned that privilege! From guarding goats and rounding up chickens to assisting in dressage lessons, these four-legged farmers put in a lot of hard work.
  • The Local Buy: South Mountain Creamery is bringing back the milkman, and Al Spoler is riding along.
  • Then & Now: Farm Dogs

Chicken Scale

Farmers used this scale to weigh their chickens when they went to market. Chickens were placed head first into the cone and weighed live with their feathers.
