Episode Description

  • Avian flu is highly contagious among poultry and is a serious threat to the millions of chickens raised on Maryland's Eastern Shore. To find out how veterinarians, farmers, and state officials are keeping birds safe, we travel to Relief Farm in Queen Anne's County and the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Animal Health Diagnostic Lab in Salisbury.
  • Tom and Lisa Godfrey of Godfrey Farms in Queen Anne's County discuss how they handle produce grown on their farm to lower the risk of contamination and prevent dangerous outbreaks of foodborne illnesses.
  • Meet two beginning farmers able to live out their dreams of working the land with the help of a program designed to support new growers in Montgomery County. Both Mark Mills of and Tomatoes Farm in Poolesville and Tanya Spandala of Passion to Seed Gardening in Gaithersburg have incorporated pieces of their pasts in their farms.
