The Intrepid
One of the most successful ships in U.S. History is now a national historic landmark, and one of the most unique attractions in New York City. In 1943, the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier was commissioned for service in World War II and went on to serve as a primary recovery vessel for NASA and then in Vietnam.
On November 6, after 24 years of rest, Intrepid will sail again, this time to Bayonne, NJ, where she will be placed in dry dock for renovations.
MPT is producing a two-hour documentary on the restoration of the Intrepid. We will be filming over the next two years and the documentary will air on PBS in 2009. Tonight, we meet Matt Woods, VP of Operations for the Intrepid.
Be sure to check out the Intrepid Webcam - it's mounted on a long mast at the top of the communications and radar array on board the carrier. It provides a 360-degree view by rotating to one of six preset viewing angles every two minutes.
